Join VAAC April 10th for Our Friday Community Meeting: Black Maternal Health Week

From Black girls to Black mothers and caregivers, civic power shapes our health, safety, and futures.

Our next VAAC Friday Community Meeting will be held on April 10th in recognition of Black Maternal Health Week.

Black maternal health is a real issue in our communities, shaped by decisions being made every day. Access to care, safe housing, economic stability, and the impact of the criminal legal system all play a role in whether Black women, families, and caregivers can live, give birth, and care for one another with dignity.

This is about what’s being prioritized and who is being supported.

This conversation will look at how civic engagement and voting shape these conditions, and why building civic power is necessary if we want different outcomes.

We will be welcoming Cassy Jones-McBryde, Founder of the Michigan Chamber for Reproductive Justice, as our guest speaker.

About Black Maternal Health Week

Black Maternal Health Week (April 11–17) is a week-long campaign founded and led by the Black Mamas Matter Alliance to build awareness, foster activism, and center the voices and lived experiences of Black mothers and birthing people.

The 2026 theme, “Rooted in Justice & Joy,” marks the 10-year anniversary of the movement. It reflects the work of Black-led maternal and reproductive health organizations that have driven change across communities, while recognizing the ongoing impact of systemic oppression, reproductive injustice, and health inequities.

The week is part of a broader effort to advance maternal health and rights, and to support a future where Black women, families, and caregivers are able to live, give birth, and care for one another with dignity.

Policies shaped by elected officials, on healthcare, housing, and the criminal legal system, directly impact Black maternal health outcomes, which is why civic engagement and voting are critical to this work.
