Next Friday’s VAAC Community Meeting: “Party Politics: How Parties Nominate Candidates” – A Nonpartisan Civic Education Program

Join VAAC and MI-CEMI next Friday, February 27th for a meeting focused on increasing public understanding of Michigan’s party convention process and candidate nomination systems.

Many community members, particularly young people, returning citizens, and individuals navigating housing instability, have limited access to information about how candidates are selected and how political institutions function. This gap in access can create barriers to meaningful participation.

This nonpartisan session will provide clear, accessible education on:

  • The role of party conventions in the election process
  • Delegate selection and participation processes
  • Nomination and voting procedures
  • Expectations for first time participants
  • Pathways for informed civic engagement

The program will also include neutral, factual information about offices commonly addressed through convention processes, including Secretary of State, Attorney General, Michigan Supreme Court, State Board of Education, and public university trustees.

By strengthening community understanding of these systems, VAAC supports informed voter participation, civic confidence, and long term community leadership development.

This program reflects VAAC’s commitment to expanding equitable access to civic education, particularly for communities historically excluded from democratic processes.

All program activities are conducted in compliance with 501(c)(3) nonpartisan guidelines and do not involve political advocacy, endorsement, or opposition.
