Earlier this year, the Michigan Collaborative to End Mass Incarceration (MI-CEMI) joined advocates, service providers, community organizations, government partners, and formerly incarcerated leaders at the fifth annual Reentry United Conference at Grand Valley State University.
Hosted by Michigan Works! West Central and its partners, the conference brought together people from across Michigan to share approaches to supporting people returning home from incarceration.

MI-CEMI Project Coordinator Michael Taylor presented “The Eight Domains of Reentry,” a developmental framework that looks beyond the first 90 days following release. The framework explores identity, emotional well-being, relationships, professional and financial development, freedom management, purpose, and relapse and reintegration.
Jennifer St. John and Adam Grant of A Brighter Way, along with Rick Speck of Nation Outside, helped ground the conversation. Together, they explored reentry as a long-term, nonlinear process and the importance of formerly incarcerated people leading the development of strategies intended to support their communities.
Thank you to Michigan Works! West Central and the organizers, presenters, volunteers, and attendees who made the conference possible. We appreciate everyone who connected with MI-CEMI throughout the day.

Continue the Conversation on November 10
Join Michael Taylor and Reentry United co-founder Nate Johnson for the next MI-CEMI Reentry Table: Build the Model, Then Scale It – Integrated Pre-Entry, Reentry & Wraparound Services.
Nate will share the comprehensive reentry model developed in Muskegon through Kingdom Life Church, Fresh Coast Alliance, and Reentry United. The model connects preparation before release, support after returning home, and community wraparound services. Michael will emcee the session, which includes an overview from Nate followed by open group discussion about building similar models in communities across Michigan.
