VAAC is partnering with Voters Not Politicians as part of the Michiganders for Money Out of Politics (MMOP) campaign, a statewide grassroots effort focused on reducing the influence of corporate money in Michigan elections.
The proposal would:
• Ban regulated utilities from making political contributions
• Ban corporations with large state or local government contracts from contributing to political campaigns
• Close loopholes that allow undisclosed political spending (“dark money”)
The campaign is working to place the proposal on the November 2026 ballot so Michigan voters can decide directly.
Right now, the campaign is in a major final signature push.
Organizers say 13,250 more volunteer signatures are needed before May 13 to help qualify the proposal for the ballot.
Supporters across Michigan are encouraging people to:
• Sign the petition
• Request a petition by mail
• Volunteer to collect signatures
• Help circulate petitions in their own neighborhoods and communities
The final day to request a petition by mail is May 8.
Organizers say that if each person reading this filled just one petition sheet with signatures from neighbors, friends, or family members, the campaign could surpass its goal.
Why is this important?
When large corporations and major contractors can financially influence elections, it affects whose voices are heard, whose priorities move forward, and how political decisions are made.
Campaigns like MMOP are one way communities can push back by putting the question directly in front of voters.
This is also part of broader conversations happening across Michigan around representation, accountability, and who has power in our democracy.
